7 Traditional Raksha Bandhan Recipes

1. Moong Dal Pakoras

Crispy and golden on the outside and soft inside, these moong dal pakoras are a comforting rakhi special recipe that pairs beautifully with green chutney and a hot cup of tea.

Ingredients:

Soaked moong dal, green chillies, ginger, onions, coriander, salt, and oil for frying

Instructions:

Grind soaked dal coarsely using a mixer grinder. Add chopped onions, green chillies, ginger, coriander, and salt. Heat oil in a deep pan. Drop spoonfuls of the batter carefully into the hot oil. Fry on medium flame until crisp and golden. Drain on paper towels and serve hot with mint or tamarind chutney.

2. Dhokla

Dhoka, a traditionally Gujrati delicacy, is a Raksha Bandhan special food option that is soft and spongy.

Ingredients:

Besan (gram flour), curd, lemon juice, Eno, salt, mustard seeds, curry leaves, green chillies

Instructions:

Whisk besan with curd, lemon juice, water, and baking soda to form a smooth, lump-free batter. Let it rest briefly, then pour the batter into a greased dish and steam until it is firm and fluffy. In a small pan, heat oil and temper mustard seeds, curry leaves, and green chillies. Pour this hot tempering evenly over the steamed dhokla. Let it cool slightly, cut into squares, and serve with green chutney.

3. Jeera Rice with Dal Makhani

The evergreen combination of Jeera Rice and Dal Makahani is one of the heartiest rakhi recipes. It will be the most festive and comforting lunch during Raksha Bandhan 2025.

Ingredients:

Basmati rice, cumin seeds, whole urad dal, rajma, tomatoes, cream, butter, ginger, garlic, garam masala

Instructions:

For jeera rice, sauté cumin seeds in a bit of ghee before adding rinsed basmati rice and water to the pressure cooker. Cook until fluffy and fragrant.

For dal makhani, pressure cook soaked whole urad dal and rajma with a pinch of salt. In a separate pan, prepare a base by sautéing ginger, garlic, tomatoes, and spices. Add the cooked dal, followed by cream and butter. Simmer gently for 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is creamy and rich.

4. Stuffed Paratha with Boondi Raita

Flaky, hot stuffed parathas paired with chilled boondi raita make one of the most filling and flavourful Raksha Bandhan recipes, ideal for brunch or lunch.

Ingredients:

Wheat flour, boiled potatoes, ajwain, coriander, green chillies, curd, boondi, salt

Instructions:

Mash boiled potatoes with ajwain, green chillies, coriander, and salt. Divide the dough into balls, roll each one slightly, stuff it with the filling, seal it, and then roll it carefully again. Cook on pan until both sides are golden and crisp.

For raita, soak the boondi in water for a minute, drain, and mix it into the curd; then whisk it. Add a pinch of roasted cumin powder and a pinch of salt. Chill before serving.

5. Sooji Halwa

Sooji halwa is one of the most favourite rakhi recipes that never fails to bring smiles, especially when garnished with nuts and cardamom.

Ingredients:

Sooji (semolina), sugar, water, ghee, cardamom powder, cashews, raisins

Instructions:

Dry roast sooji in ghee until it turns light golden and aromatic. In another vessel, boil sugar and water to make a thin syrup. Slowly pour the syrup into the roasted sooji, stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming. Cook until the mixture thickens and begins to leave the sides of the pan. Stir in cardamom powder, raisins, and roasted cashews. Serve warm for the best flavour.

6. Malpua

This traditional sweet, soaked in sugar syrup, is one of the most indulgent Raksha Bandhan special food items served during the festival.

Ingredients:

Maida (refined flour), milk, fennel seeds, sugar, cardamom, ghee

Instructions:

Mix maida, milk, and fennel seeds to make a thick but pourable batter. Let it rest for 30 minutes for proper fermentation. Heat ghee in a shallow pan and pour a ladle of batter to form a small circle. Fry on low heat until edges turn crisp and golden. Remove and dip in pre-warmed sugar syrup infused with cardamom for 2–3 minutes. Garnish with chopped nuts and serve hot.

7. Kheer

Slow-cooked and creamy, kheer is a cherished rakhi special recipe that blends tradition and comfort in every spoonful.

Ingredients:

Full-fat milk, basmati rice, sugar, cardamom, saffron strands, almonds, cashews

Instructions:

Boil full-fat milk and add soaked basmati rice. Simmer on low heat, stirring regularly to prevent sticking. Add sugar when the rice has softened, and the milk has reduced to a creamy consistency, and continue simmering. Stir in cardamom powder, saffron strands, and chopped almonds and cashews. Cook for a few more minutes. Serve warm or chilled, depending on your preference.
